Light levels increased from 580 lux to over 1400 lux while reducing energy costs through smart zoning and daylight harvesting

Pre-install
PAK’nSAVE Westgate was running ageing first-generation LED lighting that was losing output, consuming unnecessary power, and no longer delivering the brightness needed throughout the store. The store’s skylights, large windows, and varying ceiling heights created an opportunity to design a smarter lighting system that could maximise natural daylight while improving overall light levels.
What we did
We divided the store into intelligent lighting zones using wireless-controlled LED fittings and lux sensors that automatically dim lights when enough natural daylight is available. Higher-output fittings were installed in key areas like the rear aisle to boost brightness and enhance the polished concrete finish, while lower-powered fittings were used in lower ceiling areas to improve efficiency. Low-glare diffusers were also used throughout the store to improve visual comfort for customers.
Outcome
The upgrade dramatically improved the store environment, increasing light levels from around 580 lux to more than 1400 lux in key areas while reducing lighting and air conditioning energy costs. The project now delivers estimated annual energy savings of approximately $27,000 while creating a brighter, more efficient shopping experience.

LED lights helped create a safer environment for employees needing to climb the tower to complete their checks.

Lighter worked with Shearers and NZ Panels on a lighting upgrade to improve health & safety and enhance the work environment.
